$15.00
Coming Back in May!

AUTUMN '24 supply limited availability! Pre-order to reserve for Farm Pick-Up

Winterberry native shrubs ~ there's nothing quite like seeing these covered in bright red berries on a cold Winter's day.

PLANT DEETS:

  • Deciduous shrub that grows best in full sun and moist to wet soils but will tolerate part sun and drier soils.

  • Grows 8-10' tall and wide in its favored conditions

  • Supports overwintering birds particularly in late Winter when food sources are limited as that is when the red berries are fully ripened.

  • Winterberry is a dioecious plant, meaning it has separate male and female plants. For berries~ 1 male Winterberry pollinates up to 5 female Winterberry shrubs

2024 Winterbery stock 5"x8" treepots;

These shrubs are not yet identified as male or female. Spring flowering reveals this.

In my experience foraging, the largest and healthiest Winterberry shrubs are found growing in full sun in wet to moist soil that are rich in composted leaves and other organic matter. These same shrubs will often have more red berries for wildlife in Winter.

Likewise, years with ample rains I’ve observed Winterberry in normally drier soils produce more berries.

REMEMBER: We grow these and other native plants to support wildlife first. Do not harvest more of the berried stems than you really need! A little spring of the red berries goes a VERY long way in Fall & Winter arrangements!LEAVE THEM FOR THE BIRDS to help them survive the hardest & last part of Winter!

NOTE: Our 2024 Winterberry plants are local ecotype and organically grown for us by White Oak Nursery in Canandaigua,NY. An additional fee has been added to the original pricing to cover transport & container costs.
