Call it Sweet Shrub or Carolina Allspice~ Calycanthus floridus is a stunning shrub in every season.

In late Spring, maroon colored flowers appear to waft the scent of strawberries, pineapple and bananas in the air.

During Summer deep green foliage and red-brown stems are glorious to see in the habitat garden. Leaves are also fragrant with a spicy-sweet scent.

Carolina Allspice is also a host plant for several species of moths like the Saddleback Caterpillar Moth.

PLANT DEETS

  • Deciduous native shrub whose fragrance intensity varies from plant to plant

  • Grows best in part shade with average to rich moist soils. Adapts well to sandy, clay and loamy soils. Will tolerate full sun but won’t grow as tall or ‘full’

  • Depending on light conditions, will grow between 6-9’ tall and wide

  • Flowers & seeds are mildly toxic to humans, pets and livestock.

  • Wild growing species found in woodland understory and along streams. Makes an excellent hedge and windbreak.

NOTE: Our 2024 Spicebush plants are local ecotype and organically grown for us by White Oak Nursery in Canandaigua,NY. An additional $5 has been added to the original pricing to cover transport costs.
