Poison Ivy, Podcasts & Summer Plans

From poison ivy to podcasts— read on to see how this flower farmer’s week as been been full of gratitude for speed bumps & surprises!

Well it’s been a farm week with more plot twists than a Telenovela!!!

Just as Spring tasks really got going

I was cruising into all the Spring farm things that needed to be done for opening the farm in early May.

Like making & painting new plant tables

Digging & wrapping hundreds of native plants

Sowing yet even more seeds…

& even dressing up my garden witch…

Things were going along nice & smooth..

That is until poison ivy decided to throw a DISCO PARTY on my face!

(FYI I’m blaming George the Cat! ha-ha! the little darlin’!)

What I thought was a blackfly bite near my ear 4 days ago is now dancing the boogie across my eyelids.

The poison ivy oils are cruising on down to ‘Electric Avenue’ aka my cheeks. HA~HA~HA!

Thanks to Dr. Lesley — I’m slowly on the mend from the poison ivy & a nasty 3 week chest cold.

Sure I’m behind on ‘all the things’ now. REALLY BEHIND!

Coughing and itching is not helpful when there are 800 plants to dig and wrap in less than 3 weeks!!!

Slow, steady and with great dance music is how we cruise over these small speed bumps of life my friend.

and events like these are indeed small and temporary~ like Jack Sparrow, I like to wave at them as they pass by…

SURPRISE POISON IVY PERK

Morning & evening face~painting sessions!

I use an actual artist paintbrush loaded with bright pink calamine lotion.

Now there’s a picture of creative & wild fun for sure! Plus it’s practice while waiting for warmer temps to paint the nursery tables.

The second plot twist…

While burning more wood trays yesterday I got some cool news!

Karen C. your Lazy Dirt Gang friend, emailed me to let us all know about this wonderful op ed piece in Syracuse.com written by Sari Fordam.

Sari is also a fellow in the Lazy Dirt Gang! She is an amazing writer, environmental activist, and professor at Oswego State University.

I think you’ll love her take on No Mow May!

THE PLOT TWISTS WEREN’T OVER YET..

THEY JUST KEPT COMING!

This one is a secret I’ve been waiting to share with you since February! We weren’t sure when it would occur due to life happenings.

But HAPPEN IT DID!

In March, I participated in my first podcast interview EVER with the fabulous Mary Kingsley of the Lady Farmer.

We had EPIC gardening chats about native plants, slow living and Earth-friendly gardening practices.

Mary published the episode yesterday!!

I hope you can take a listen to the podcast and share a laugh with Mary & I.

Be sure to subscribe to the Good Dirt podcast— they are all amazing episodes filled with knowledge, hope & connection!

Before you go, here’s a question for you!

This bout of poison ivy is itchy but a GOOD THING!

I know. I know. I see ya over there laughing but hear me out…

This poison ivy reminded me to make Jewelweed Salve this year.

Leading us to our last PLOT TWIST!

Summer fun here at the farm…

While sipping tea for the cold and letting the calamine dry, an old idea popped up again…

How can I share the beauty of the farm in all it’s Summer blooms & wonders. Seriously- every Summer the farm’s flowers & wildlife put on an amazing show. But most guests visit in Spring & Autumn planting seasons and they miss the Summer splendor!

Here’s my question for you…

Would you like to join me for ‘make & take’ workshops this Summer?

Some of the ideas I’ve been pondering are:

  • Making gardener’s salves for relief from poison ivy plus others for gardening.

  • Wildflower tea making & sampling.

  • Dried floral wreaths like with Lavender

  • Pretty flower posies to donate to a local nursing home.

  • Container gardening with native plants and of course fun with seed harvesting & sowing!

Is this something you’d be interested in this Summer?

Yes? Oh and you say you have some fun ideas? I’d LOVE to hear them! Post ‘em in the comments below or EMAIL THEM TO ME HERE

Thanks for reading my garden note!

I have to go repaint my face now…

Can’t wait to see you in a few more weeks! Hopefully without any poison ivy! Cheers to YOU my friends! Cheers to YOU!
