Spring arrives at Lazy Dirt Wildflower Farm

A sign of Spring?

Here at our farm in Mexico, NY the first signs of Spring’s return occur in February. I eagerly watch for night time temperatures to increase into the upper 30s to mid 40s consistently and slowly see more daylight every day.

This small shifts help me to find joy in the last cold weeks of Winter. A time when I am tired of cold, snow, and stocking the woodstove in the wee hours of the night.

By early March I watch the skies for my friends return…

On morning walks I scan fields and listen. And listen some more for a sound not heard since September! Red-winged Blackbirds and American Robins!

Migrating in flocks from the South, these feathered friends arrival lifts my spirit into Spring!

Here at the farm, the male Robins just arrived and feasting where the snow has melted in the fields & woodlands.

Despite 3 days of 60* daytime temperatures there is still a lot of snow on the ground. With so much snow, they’ve also been spotted in the Sumac hedge eating the dried berries.

But the air is filled with Robins twittering their claims to territories as they already seek out the best nesting spots.

I learned a lot about Robins last year as we had 7 Robin nests all next to the house and barn! Some even had 2 clutches of chicks last season!

Now I don’t have favorites but there was one couple who chose our lilac bush by the dining room window.

They even decorated their nest with dried hydrangeas!

It really was such a pretty nest…

We watched this nest all Summer as the parents raised 2 clutches of chicks in it. Through Summer storms and hot afternoons— it was a magically experience.

One morning during my daily ‘dawn patrol’ of the farm I even got a very fast photo of the chicks! They next day they fledged in early morning hours.

Spring moments like these are what I hope to share with you this coming year

I’ve planned year of fun events here at the farm to share with you! There’s everything from garden design workshops to soil blocking. Bird watching and flower arranging too!

See what’s coming up for SPRING!
