In the wild, you’ll find Black Chokeberry shrubs feeding & sheltering wildlife in woodland edges. They are a small understory shrub that grows in moist and dry soils~ but its happiest in moist soils well draining soils.

Black Chokecherry is known for its berries that feed overwintering birds as well as its brilliant red, orange and purple leaves in Autumn

  • Best fruit production when planted in full sun but tolerates part shade too

  • Happiest in moist to average well draining soils ~ tolerant of clay and sandy loam once established

  • Fruits best in full sun but at home in part shade. Fruits are bitter but high in pectin and can be made into jams & jellies!

  • Grows 6-12’ tall with a mounding shape.

  • Pair with Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis), Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbitifolia) and Silky Dogwood (Cornus amomum) for a beautiful wildlife hedge or in a rain garden!
